Which red dot sight suits your application?

The right red dot sight depends on how you plan to use it, your preferred dot size and the mounting system available on your setup. A compact open reflex sight has different characteristics from an enclosed micro red dot or a tube-style model for a Picatinny rail. Compare more than the price alone. Check the magnification, MOA value, footprint, included mount, controls and supplied accessories.

What is a red dot sight?

A red dot sight uses a small LED to project an illuminated dot or another aiming pattern onto its lens. The dot appears to sit on the target, while remaining visible only to the person looking through the sight. Unlike a traditional riflescope, a true red dot sight normally has no magnification.

You do not need to position your eye at one exact distance directly behind the sight. This helps you maintain a clear view and use a more natural position. You look at the target and bring the illuminated dot onto it. A red dot is therefore particularly useful when a wide field of view and a quickly recognisable aiming point are important.

Always check the exact product type. A red dot category may also include prism sights, holographic sights and models with fixed magnification. Check whether your chosen model genuinely provides 1x magnification.

Which MOA dot size should you choose?

MOA stands for Minute of Angle. For a red dot sight, it indicates how much of the target the dot covers at a given distance. One MOA equals approximately 2.9 cm at 100 metres. A smaller dot covers less of the target, while a larger dot is usually easier to notice quickly.

• 2 MOA: a fine dot for users who want minimal target coverage and a small aiming point.
• 3 to 4 MOA: a versatile middle ground for different applications and distances.
• 5 to 8 MOA: a larger, highly visible dot when speed matters more than having an especially fine aiming point.

The MOA value only describes the visible size of the dot. Its brightness, sharpness, mounting system and overall construction also affect how the sight performs in practice.

Open reflex sight, enclosed red dot or tube-style sight?

An open reflex sight has a compact construction with an exposed viewing window. It takes up little space and provides an open view of the surroundings. The emitter is more exposed to dust, moisture and dirt.

With an enclosed red dot, the emitter and optical system sit inside a sealed housing. This reduces the chance of dirt blocking the projected dot. Enclosed models are useful for intensive outdoor use or environments involving rain, mud and dust.

A tube-style sight has a cylindrical housing and is often fitted directly to a Weaver or Picatinny rail. These models are generally larger than micro red dots and often offer clearly accessible controls, lens covers and different mounting heights.

Red dot or green dot?

Alongside the familiar red dot, some models offer a green dot or a choice between red and green. The easiest colour for you to see depends on your eyes, the lighting conditions and the background. A green dot may provide stronger contrast in some environments, while other users see a red dot more calmly or sharply.

Do not look at colour alone. The number of brightness levels, the lowest and highest available intensity and the sharpness of the aiming point are equally important. Some models also feature automatic brightness control, night vision settings or motion activation.

Always check the mount and footprint

Not every red dot sight fits directly onto every rail, mounting plate or prepared platform. Compact red dots often use a specific footprint or mounting system. Examples include Shield RMS, DeltaPoint Pro, Docter/Noblex, Glock MOS-compatible adapter plates and Micro T1/T2. Tube-style models commonly use a Weaver or Picatinny mount.

Before ordering, check:

• which footprint or rail your platform uses;
• whether a mount or adapter plate is included;
• which screws and dimensions are required;
• whether the mounting height suits the rest of your setup;
• whether you need an additional riser or adapter.

Consider the battery, brightness and controls

The operating time of a red dot sight depends on the battery, selected brightness level and available energy-saving functions. Models with automatic shut-off, motion activation or solar support require less attention during storage and use.

The position of the battery compartment also matters. A top-loading or side-loading compartment often allows you to replace the battery while keeping the red dot mounted. If the battery compartment is underneath the sight, you may need to remove it. Check the zero afterwards.

A red dot sight is particularly suitable when a clear overview and a quickly visible aiming point are important. A traditional riflescope is a better choice when you need to magnify the target or see more detail at longer distances. Frequently asked questions about red dot sights

Does a red dot sight provide magnification?

Most true red dot sights offer 1x magnification and do not enlarge the image. Prism sights and other aiming optics may combine an illuminated reticle with fixed magnification. Always check the product type and stated magnification.

Which is better: 2 MOA or 6 MOA?

A 2 MOA dot is smaller and covers less of the target. A 6 MOA dot is easier to spot quickly, but covers a larger area at the same distance. The best option depends on the application, distance and your personal preference.

Does every red dot fit a Picatinny rail?

What does parallax-free mean on a red dot sight?

Manufacturers generally use the term parallax-free for a specified distance or a very small visible deviation within the intended operating range. No optical system is completely free from deviation under every possible condition. Check the specifications and stated parallax distance of the selected model.

Which accessories do I need for a red dot sight?

This depends on the included components and your existing mounting platform. Possible accessories include a rail mount, adapter plate, riser, protective cover, lens protector, spare battery or compatible magnifier. Always check whether the accessory matches the footprint and mounting height.
